Why a search opens on News, Shopping or Websites
When you search from the home page or the All tab, 4Search looks at your words first. If they clearly ask for news, for something to buy, or for a particular website, the page opens on News, Shopping or Websites instead, and a line at the top says so.
#What you see
electric vehicles, searched on All, opened on News. The note says so, and See all results instead goes back.
- 1What you typed on All
- 2The tab 4Search picked
- 3Says what happened
- 4One click back to All
- The tab 4Search picked is underlined.
- A line reads Showing news results for this search., Showing shopping results for this search. or Showing website matches for this search.
- See all results instead opens the same search on the All tab and keeps it there.
#What makes 4Search pick a tab
| Your words | Likely tab | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Recent events, or a subject outlets are covering now | News | electric vehicles, hurricane, election results, a phrase like latest or today, a year such as 2026 |
| Buying words or prices | Shopping | running shoes under 100, buy, deals, cheapest |
| A website's name or address | Websites | youtube, example.com, www. at the start |
Some searches stay on All even when they mention a brand or a news subject, because they ask for a specific page: store hours, a phone number, a menu, a login, near me, directions, a street address. Searches with an operator such as site: also stay where you typed them.
The check is a guess. When it is unsure, it leaves you on All.
#Stay on the tab you chose
- The guess is made only from the home page and the All tab. When you search from the News, Web, Websites, Images or Videos tab, you stay there.
- After See all results instead, the All tab stays put: changing the filters keeps you on All.
- If you select the All tab from News for a news-like search, 4Search may make the same guess again and reopen News. Use See all results instead in the note.
#Common questions
Why did my search open the News tab?
Your words looked like a news search, often because outlets are covering the subject right now. Select See all results instead for the All tab.
Can I stop it from happening?
Search from the tab you want, or use See all results instead. Adding an operator also keeps the search on All.
Does 4Search change my results when it picks a tab?
It changes which tab you see first. Your words are the same, and every other tab is still one click away.
